Hi!
My name is Sadie and I'm a trans woman currently studying graphic design at Portland State University. I'm a low-income, underemployed, first generation student who dreams of pursuing a career in visual arts and further supporting the LGBTQ+ community.
I had anticipated moving in with my elderly relatives for the duration of summer, however, due to the risks of COVID-19 transmission, and my relatives being of a high-risk population, it is no longer safe for me to do so. It is now necessary for me to stay in on-campus housing for the safety of myself and my relatives, although I had previously not planned on that expense. I have also found difficulty in my search for a job to pay for said expenses due to COVID-19 closures. The only other housing option available to me at this time would be unsafe, due to the transphobic attitudes of the people living there.
As a trans woman, I am already at an increased risk of facing housing insecurity, job insecurity, and forms of violence. If I am unable to obtain funding to stay in on-campus housing for summer 2020, I will be forced to live with people who are unsupportive and not understanding of my identity. This would be incredibly detrimental to my mental and physical wellbeing, would put me in harm's way, and would likely lead to my inability to continue my pursuit of education.
