Hi, I'm Leon, an adult, autistic trans man based in Spain, trying to make a living as a freelance artist, while struggling with mental health issues and the rising cost of living.
Since I came out as trans, I've came across many bumps: from the first time I talked to my therapist about it (who questioned my transness over something trivial), to my endocrinologist therapist, who, upon seeing me breaking down and crying my eyes out out of anxiety and fear, coldly told me that "he was not the one I had to cry to to get hormones." To the multiple years I had to wait to get my name changed on my government documentation, and even many more to get my gender changed too, due to bureaucratic hell loops and lack of information. To doctors making inappropriate comments about my body or misgendering and deadnaming when treating me for anything. To the ignorance and casual cruelty within my own support systems, like being guilt tripped for not coming out sooner, constantly being outed without permission to many people, including my abuser, or the unwillingness to understand why still being called a girl by family members to this day would hurt me. My trans journey has been one that, while I ultimately made it to the other side of every hurdle, was never without unfair demands, pain, lack of understanding and especially, a big feeling of isolation along all of it. I thought that I finally was done with all the hoops and bumps in my transition when I finally got my gender marker changed to "man" in my legal documents earlier this year, and all remaining was to endure life as it is, now happier and more comfortable in my body. But as I continued to grow and know myself better, I eventually found out that was not the case and I have started to feel dysphoric and alienated again. And that's why this GoFundMe came to be.
I'm starting this campaign because I want to be able to afford bottom surgery, specifically metoidioplasty and scrotoplasty, hopefully in the near future. To achieve this goal, I need to raise 20.000€.
Why a GoFundMe campaign?
The truth is that, even though I've been working as a freelance artist for a few years now, to this day I still don't make half of minimum wage (the minimum wage in Spain is 1221€ per month, at the time of writing this), so even if I tried to save up for this surgery myself, it would take me many years if I saved most of my earnings, and no one in my family has the means to contribute either.
Unfortunately things have also been getting progressively worse for trans people globally, with rights and protections being stripped away, all of that combined with prices raising for everything everywhere. The future is uncertain and scary, and I don't want to wait and see if it gets better before it gets worse, so I felt like my best shot at getting these surgeries was to start a GoFundMe campaign and rely on people's help.
I will still try to save money myself to the best of my ability, but anything this campaign collects will be huge help, even if I don't necessarily reach the desired 20.000€ goal.
Doesn't Spain have good trans healthcare?
Yes and no.
While compared to other countries, Spain covers (for now) many needs for trans people, they do so clumsily and insufficiently.
I did get my top surgery thanks to spanish healthcare, but with a few caveats: needing a pathologizing diagnose of dysphoria, being required to be in HRT for at least one year, then having to wait an additional year for the surgery itself. This was years ago. As far as I know, the pathologizing requirements are not a thing anymore thanks to the latest Trans Law (a law that some political parties want to undo), but the waiting times have gotten MUCH worse, and the deficiency of many systems are yet to be addressed. Nowadays when I request a phone or in-situ appointment with my endocrine doctor, I have to wait easily 6+ months to get the appointment, and then some more months to ACTUALLY have the appointment itself. I need these appointments to track my hormone levels and make sure they stay healthy, and this type of waiting risks my health, as well as the health of many people who live here. This is the state of healthcare across all levels currently, with the local community governments refusing to do anything about it.
Even if the previous points weren't bad enough, where I live specifically (Galicia), they don't have surgeons for masculinizing bottom surgery to begin with, so I'd be required to look for one and travel to a different community, and there's no guarantee the public healthcare system would be willing to cover the specific surgeries under the conditions I want, or without making me wait many years. Ultimately, even if I got it approved, a key point remains: I'm responsible to initially cover the surgery myself, anyway, before they reimburse it to me (if they decide to do so), so my situation and need for help remains the same. This is the reality of trans healthcare in Spain.
So rather than being forced to wait multiple years for limited surgery options, during a current global state where rights and protections are being taken away, and while having to deal with this discomfort, I had to decide that the best choice was to pursue private healthcare for my surgery and try to fund it via this campaign, so hopefully I can access the surgery more quickly and without caveats.
What are the numbers?
Math isn't my strength but I did my best to ask for the right information, look up prices ranges, and get the best estimations.
The surgery itself oscillates between 12.000€ and 15.000€ EURO. Ideally I can at least get 80-90% funded via this campaign. Even though the quote covers a lot of stuff, there could be unexpected costs if for example I need additional surgery (+600€ per hour), or I need to stay more days at the clinic than the ones covered by the initial quote (+385€ per night).
But then there's also trip and stay costs, which are harder to calculate. I either would have to travel to Madrid or Barcelona, I'm unsure yet if by car/bus or train or plane. The cost for these trips will easily cost minimum 300€ or 400€ to as much as 1000€ if not more, depending on the option that seems more suitable, considering I'd be a person recovering from a surgery on the way back, on a potentially several hour trip, plus necessarily requiring a second person to come with me and assist me, without forgetting that prices do vary a lot depending on when I purchase any tickets and the luggage I take with me, or potential costs due having to change traveling dates, etc.
There's also the stay costs. Both Madrid and Barcelona are very expensive cities compared to where I live, and while the clinics I'm looking into would admit me for a few days for the surgery and the subsequent monitoring, I was already warned that I'd be required to stay in the city for 2-3 additional weeks in case complications happen and I need to return to the clinic. I think I'd be very lucky if I could find decent hotels or even Airbnb options for that long under 2000€ EURO (Prices range from 1500€ to as much as 6000€). That of course with other needs, like traveling between the clinic and my place of stay, or around the city to pay for groceries and the likes. I estimate that I'd be needing an additional 3000€ or 4000€ EURO for all of this..
Then lastly, there's the fees and taxes. A donation in GoFundMe costs 2'9% + 0,25€ per transaction. This isn't the worst but it does take a bite as money adds up. Then there's the spanish tax on a donation itself; it's not pretty. The law and guidelines on Spain are convoluted and vary when it comes to donations, but for what concerns my case (getting a bunch of tiny donations from good-willed strangers) and the sake of simplification, each donation would have a 15'3% tax applied. Meaning that if someone decides to donate 100€ for example, GoFundMe would give me 96,85€, and then after the spanish tax, I'd end up with 82,03€.
That's why I needed to bump the donation goal to such a high number, because I'm already counting on easily 20% of anything collected to be paid on taxes/fees alone.
This is the first time I ask for such huge help. I've always tried to work for the stuff I wanted or needed, despite my economic limitations or mental health struggles, even if I often failed and had to give up on it, or rely on others a bit, inconveniencing them. I can't give up on this surgery, and that's why this campaign is a thing. Things are hard for everyone these days, so I will hugely appreciate any help provided, whether by donating or sharing.
I know I'm asking for a lot, so thank you so much for taking the time to read my story. I hope that with the help of everyone I am able to take a big step towards happiness, and making my life a bit less difficult in the grand scheme of things.
I will be updating the campaign as it progresses or as any relevant changes happen.
