Help a Trans Couple Move Out of Texas

Donation protected
My name is Christopher DeLaGarza. (Please ignore my legal name; I haven't been able to afford to change it yet.) I am a 26 year old trans man dealing with chronic pain from a workplace injury. I need some help to move out of Texas with my nonbinary partner and our cats. We are going to the Northeast, but for privacy reasons, I'm not comfortable saying exactly where.

Why We Need To Move

We need to move for many reasons. The first is so that we can be closer to a support network of our friends, many of whom live in the Northeast. We've felt very isolated here, even before the pandemic began.

Secondly, we do not feel safe making progress in our transitions here. This state grows more and more hostile to trans people, and I can't find a local surgeon I would trust with my top surgery.

The third reason is that I need to move for my health- the mental health system in Texas has not been helping with my PTSD, and the intense summer heat has been worsening my chronic migraines.

Perhaps most importantly, we might not be able to afford to live here for much longer. The electric company that has a monopoly in San Antonio keeps raising the rates, and our summer AC bills get higher every year.

Why We Need Help (Our Story)

At age 20, I escaped an isolated and transphobic household. My grandparents took me in for a year until I could afford to rent an apartment with my partner. Unfortunately, because I could not afford to go to college, the only way I managed this was by working at Amazon.

After working at Amazon for three years, I developed severe chronic neck pain. This was from straining to lift heavy boxes and put them in high shelves. I already knew from co-workers that the warehouse did not take care of injured employees, so I had to quit.

Since then, I've been working as a freelance artist to feed my family. Sadly, medical emergencies, car repairs, and summer AC bills have completely destroyed my savings.

Though my partner is getting a job this year, too, it won't pay enough for us to be able to save to move out of Texas. All the money from this gofundme will go towards moving expenses, paying off enough debt to be accepted by a landlord, and deposit for the place we move to.

Conclusion

After we move, I will do my best to pay people's kindness forward. The better climate will allow me to do more community work, which I haven't been able to do much of here because of the heat and my health. Thank you for reading this ! Please do not donate if you are struggling; even a share helps us out a bunch.
