Help a trans couple escape a hostile state
Hi, our names are Amber and Kara. we've been living in Oklahoma for a long time. Over this time we've rapidly seen a progression towards open hostility for the trans community here, to the point, it is now escalating into full-on transition-related healthcare bans. HB2177 passed the OK House on 02-28-2023 and will be moving to the OK Senate. Today, the OK Senate committee approved SB129 to move to the full OK Senate floor for a vote.
Between those two bills, they will ostensibly ban gender transition-related care in the state of Oklahoma by banning private insurance companies from being able to pay for transition-related healthcare for everybody, adults and children (HB2177), and then ban medical providers and pharmacies from providing transition-related care if they receive state of federal funding, such as Medicare and Medicaid (SB127).
Between those two bills alone, it will be impossible to exist as a trans person in the state of Oklahoma. We are needing the money for moving expenses for us, such as moving truck, moving supplies (boxes, tape, moving blankets, etc), vehicle trailer rental, gas for the travel, and trying to get established where we get moved to (housing and utility hookup costs).
Currently, Amber is struggling with Long COVID, which is limiting her ability to work her job, and is currently on Short Term Disability, but hasn't received a check since November. Kara has a remote tech support job and works from home, and is supporting all the household expenses currently, but it is not enough to cover everything and save for moving expenses.
