Nurses are at the forefront of providing dietary and lifestyle advice to patients yet little is taught around this subject and what is taught tends to be outdated evidence. This is shocking as nearly two-thirds of adults (63%) in England were classed as being overweight or obese in 2015. Furthermore, the cost to the NHS in relation to the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes is estimated to be more than £6.1 billion. It is also estimated that treatment spent annually on obesity and diabetes is greater than the amount spent on the police, the fire service and judicial system combined (Public Health England, 2017).This is a huge public health concern!
We are 4 nurses dedicated to improving the health of our patients by giving them a choice of lifestyle rather than life long medication. We are all ambassadors of the Public Health Collaboration (www.PHCUK.org
), an amazing charity aimed at changing the current food guidelines and ultimately saving the NHS from the burden of chronic disease.
We are currently helping one patient at a time, but it’s not enough. The current education for lifestyle medicine is amazing, but the conferences are expensive often out pricing nurses, leaving them mainly with access to drug funded conferences and study days, where the speakers are paid by pharmaceutical companies.
Our hope is to give as many nurses and GP’s access to a day of fantastic informative talks updating them on the studies and science behind Lifestyle as a superior choice when it comes to treating metabolic syndrome and chronic diseases.
We need your help! We won’t be receiving any sponsorship from big pharma , so we are relying on much smaller organisations to support us so we can pay for a conference room, cover speakers travel costs, and provide lunch for the attendees. On top of this, all profits made will be donated to Public Health Collaboration for the fantastic work they do!
