In need of support due to medical debt.

Two years ago, I was referred to a neurologist in Fort Smith. I had recently moved to Arkansas but had seen a neurologist previously in Missouri. Prior to going to the appointment, I gave them my insurance information. My past experience with specialists was that all services were pre-approved prior to the appointment. In some cases, I had to pay ahead of time.

Due to changing specialists, I typed up a document with my complete medical history. I made sure to give a copy to the nurse for my file and the doctor to read. While I was there, the doctor asked if I was interested in some additional neurological tests. There was no indication that it was not covered by insurance. Additionally, this testing was not done using expensive equipment. Two of the tests were done using blood pressure cuffs, and the other was done using acupuncture needles.

Two days later, they called me with the results, and I was perplexed. I was told I had diabetic neuropathy in my lower legs. I am not diabetic, and my circulation had been tested prior, so I knew I had no issues. Furthermore, they had done no bloodwork. So when the doctor prescribed a $300 prescription vitamin for diabetics and weight loss, I felt like there must have been a mix-up.

I asked the office to see a copy of my chart information, and despite giving them a detailed printout of my medical history, there were many errors. There were questions it said I was asked with answers that were completely incorrect. Then I got the bill.

The extra “tests” I was offered were not covered by my insurance. If I had been told I was being offered services that would not have been approved, I would have said no. Coupled with the results being completely false, I decided to fight these charges.

Two years later, the result is not the one I had hoped for. I lost in court, and now they are garnishing my checks in April and May for a total of $1,798.00.

I am a special education teacher, and I also have one daughter still in college at the University of Arkansas. I am the sole provider for her education. Additionally, the amount being garnished is almost equal to a month’s rent for me, $1,723.00.

I am fundraising to cover the garnished wages and ensure I can continue to support my daughter’s education and pay my rent.
