Local legend and Alice Springs icon Jol Fleming is fighting once again.

 Jol survived a motor vehicle accident in his late 20s which left him a quadriplegic. However, Jol refused to give up on life. He became one of Australia’s most skilled four wheel drive experts, and a legend of the outback. He has taught hundreds to drive safely and survive in the Central Australian desert and has personally led many tag-along outback adventures to some of the most remote parts of the Red Centre. His bush knowledge is revered, and his contribution to the Alice Springs community is in a class of its own.

Jol is once again fighting for his life. After two years of being bed ridden with an ulcer on his buttock, he recently became critically ill. He was diagnosed with necrotising fasciitis, a life threatening, flesh eating infection of the pelvic tissues. Emergency surgery failed to completely remove the area of damaged tissue. He was so unwell that the doctors felt further surgery would be futile. At his request he was transferred home to die. At his living wake family and friends flooded from all corners of Australia and further afield to say farewell and honour this amazing man.

Jol is once again defying the odds and seems destined to survive. He will be transferred to Adelaide for further treatment to deal with his damaged bowel, bladder and pelvic tissues. His journey will be long and difficult.

While Jol’s prospects for survival have improved, his financial situation is tenuous. He has been forced to close his business, his TIO pension is about to end, and his two years of illness have left him with significant debt.
