Buckle up, this one is a ride. I am raising money for legal fees and other financial burdens associated with an upcoming conduct case.
I am a fourth year at New College of Florida. Back in May, I attended a college party, not to party, but to be a sober person passing out water and had my first aid bag on hand. I have worked previously in healthcare and have been first aid certified for about a decade.
(Image of my first aid bag, cases of water, and a cooler full of cold water at the party)
A student asked if I could help with second student. I walked over and noticed this student was not ok. After talking to them for a few minutes, I said we needed to call campus PD as they were not improving with rest and water. For their sake, I won't go into full details. PD came and after more chatting, the consensus was to move this student to their dorm.
After getting them to their dorm, PD left stating they would check back in later as there were friends and myself present. After a short time, I made the decision that EMS needed to be called as they were still not improving. In fact, they had started getting worse. EMS came and PD came back. The student consented to going to the ER.
At no point did I give any medication, CPR, didn't start an IV.... nothing. I comforted them and observed them for any changes as first aid permits. I helped calm them down to talk to PD. I kept friends calm and gave them tasks like getting water or snacks and making the calls.
So why do I need legal fees? Well, the school has decided that I first lied about being first aid certified, and when I provided my card, decided that I "medically assessed a student without having a medical license". They are also saying that I "represented a medical professional". I had on a first aid T-shirt, basketball shorts, and barefoot. Also, they are alleging that I have been instructed to not "do this" again. This is false. The sanction they are recommending that I be suspended for up to a year!!
Not sure yet what the legal fees will be so I set it at $1000 to get started. If you think sitting with a compromised student is what any reasonable person would do, please help by donating and/or sharing this fundraiser!
