My name is Megan, and I am living with severe ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis). Recently, I went through a terrifying psychotic episode that resulted in a legal crisis. During the episode, my family called 911 for help, and in my confusion, I allegedly struck a police officer who entered my apartment. I have little memory of what happened, but I am now facing a class 6 felony charge in Virginia. This is not the first time my illness has led to legal trouble; in 2021, I was charged in a similar situation, but with the help of a skilled lawyer, my charge was reduced to a misdemeanor and I served 10 days in jail.
My biggest fear is what jail time would mean for my health. My severe ME makes even basic self-care, like showering, nearly impossible. The thought of being incarcerated again is overwhelming and terrifying, as my condition is simply not compatible with jail. I desperately want to avoid this outcome and protect my health and future.
I am hoping to hire the same lawyer who helped me before, as he was able to get my previous charge reduced. Unfortunately, his services are costly, and I cannot afford them on my own. That’s why I am reaching out for help. If you are unable to donate, please consider sharing my story so I can reach others who might be able to support me. I am truly grateful for any help you can offer, whether it’s a donation or simply spreading the word. Thank you for taking the time to read, donate, and share.
