My father, John, a veteran, and a US Navy Seabee is at this time considered catastrophically disabled. Due to medical reasons he has been unable to regain the ability to walk. As grateful as I am for the medical support and accomidations from the Veterans Administration my father falls into a gap where some services and financial assitance are non existent or limited as many other veterans experience. He requires support from family and is often met with many limitations. We face challenges providing preventative healthcare when transportation is limited to and from the VA. As the contracted transport companies take on more emergency calls those veterans waiting for scheduled transports are affected. When we arrive late to an appointment we may be at risk of being sent home and having our appointment (which has been scheduled months prior) cancelled or often left waiting for hours before getting transportation home. There is no option to bring him to our preferred medical providers at the emergency room at the Northport VA when he feels ill and does not have a scheduled appointment. A minor medical issue can quickly turn into days or weeks spent in a hospital at risk of getting worse or additional injuries or illness occurring. I'm often left with no option but to call 911 and have him treated at a local hospital who may not allow me to be present to advocate for him and may not have his current medical history on file.
I'm asking for donations to support medical bills that have not been covered, handicapped transportation, home renovations to support continuing home based care, and financial support for daily and upcoming expenses for my father. Please consider donating or sharing this link to help support costs associated with sustaining preventative care. There are only so many hours in a day that we can work to advocate and provide the support he needs so I'm asking for support for a veteran in need from all of you. As my father would say when faced with any challenge, "SEABEES CAN DO!" Let's show him what we can do as a community.
