Help a Rural Nepali School Get Supplies & Clean Water

Hi, my name is Saurav Bhatta, and I’m a rising senior at Oakton High School in Virginia. My family is from Nepal, and I’m starting a nonprofit to support underfunded schools in rural Nepal—beginning with Chandeshwori Basic School, a small primary school located in Jamrung, Tari Bessi, in Nilkantha 10 Dhading, deep in the Nepali countryside.

This school is incredibly meaningful to me as it is close to where my mother grew up, and the principal is a very close relative. The school has 40 students from grades 1 through 5. A large amount of people who used to live in the area either move to the city for a better education for their children or send their children to private bording schools, leaving only the lower income families to attend the underfunded public schools. This is very different from what we see in the US. as public and private schools are very similar here, as the government does give the public schools funding to help and teach the students, unlike in Nepal, where the public doesn't really trust the education of the public school system and is left for those who cannot afford the private schools. Majority of the school's students have to walk more than an hour just to get to school, which can be dangerous as they are all young. They attend because they want to learn but the school lacks even the most basic resources.

There are 6 teachers and 1 cook, sent by the government, but no official funding is provided for school supplies or infrastructure. That’s just how the public education system works in many parts of Nepal.

The school does have a water tank, but it isn’t safe to drink from. The purifying system is broken, and there are conflicts over the water supply with nearby locals. If enough is raised, I also hope to help the school build their own direct water line from a nearby stream, ensuring reliable and safe drinking water for the students.

Why It Matters

Education should never be held back by poverty. These students are doing everything they can to learn, so now let’s do what we can do to support them. Their school year starts August 10, and even a small donation will make a real difference. I’ve seen firsthand how hard it is for rural schools to operate without help, and this is just the beginning of a long-term mission to uplift education in Nepal. Any and all donations would be incredibily appreciated and significant in the betterment of these students education and lives. 100% of the donations will be directly sent to the school.
