Help a Rohingya Student Complete His Education

Donation protected
My name is Maung Sawyeddollah, and I am the first Rohingya refugee to study at New York University, a journey that once seemed impossible.

Born in Myanmar, my people, the Rohingya, have faced decades of genocide, statelessness, and discrimination. In 2017, my family and I were forced to flee to Bangladesh, where I spent years in the world’s largest refugee camp, Cox’s Bazar. Life in the camps meant no legal identity, no access to higher education, and no future beyond survival. But I refused to accept that as my fate.

With sheer determination and the support of incredible individuals like you, I defied the odds, I fought for the right to education, and I founded the Rohingya Student Network to uplift other Rohingya youth. Against all barriers, I secured admission to NYU, one of the world’s top universities, and arrived in the U.S. as an international student on a special travel document, making history as the first Rohingya student to do so.

Why I Need Your Support
Getting here was just the beginning. As an international student without a passport, my ability to work is extremely limited. As an F-1 visa holder, I do not qualify for federal student loans or most grants, making it nearly impossible to fill the financial gap. I am still short by $20,000 to cover my Spring 2025 tuition, and without additional support, I risk being unable to continue my studies.

Why This Matters
Finishing my degree at NYU is not just about my education; it is about bringing positive change for all the people of Myanmar. My country has suffered under oppression, violence, and instability for too long. I dream of returning to Myanmar one day to help rebuild it, advocate for human rights, and ensure that every community, regardless of ethnicity or religion, has a future rooted in justice, equality, and peace.

My studies in international relations and social sciences are equipping me with the knowledge and skills to fight for policy change, inclusive governance, and opportunities for all Myanmar’s people. By completing my education, I hope to play a role in building a future where no one is persecuted, no one is left behind, and every young person has the chance to thrive.

Your contribution will help me:
  • Cover tuition fees and academic expenses at NYU
  • Afford housing and living expenses in New York
  • Continue my advocacy work for the Rohingya and all marginalized communities of Myanmar while pursuing my degree
  • What Your Support Means
For many, education is a given. For me, it is a fight for survival, dignity, and hope. By supporting my journey, you are not just funding my education; you are investing in a future where stateless youth like me can dream beyond borders and where Myanmar can one day heal and rebuild.

Your generosity means breaking the cycle of statelessness, empowering the next generation, and proving that no child should be denied an education simply because of their identity.

Join Me in Making History
Every dollar, every share, and every act of kindness makes a difference. If you cannot donate, please share my story; help me reach those who believe that education should not be a privilege but a right.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for believing in me, in education, and in a future where every child, no matter where they come from, has a chance to learn and lead.
