About Lalu
Lalu is a young Rohingya man who arrived in the US a few years ago, After things did not work out with his initial foster family, Lalu has been living in a series of foster care group homes. Since he will "age out" of the foster care system in a few years, Lalu has been working hard to develop the skills he will need to live on his own, such as learning to read and write English (despite having almost no formal early education) and studying for his driver's learning permit test.

Despite many challenges in early childhood and coming to the US as a refugee, Lalu is very resilient and resourceful. He is a devout Muslim and has close ties with other Rohingya refugees in the area and is adept as using social media to stay in touch.
How We Met
I first met Lalu through his foster care case manager who is a friend of mine. She had asked me if I could help out with getting him to activities such as Friday prayers at his mosque and tutoring sessions at the New American Center in Lynn, MA. Over the past few months, this has evolved into becoming a mentor to Lalu and working with him to figure out many aspects of daily life from maintaining a mobile phone account to coming up with an action plan to acquire a driver's license.
How Your Donations Can Help
Although both parents are deceased, Lalu has some family still living in Myanmar and Malaysia. A big motivation for him to learn is so he can attain the necessary skills get a job that will enable him to be independent and be able send money back to his family.
Any funds received for Lalu would go towards a cell phone so he can stay in touch with his family overseas, a down payment towards a car, and a savings account so he will eventually be able to afford a place to live.
As his mentor, I will work with his foster care case manager to transfer any funds received into a bank account in Lalu's name that he will be able to access.
Any assistance towards helping Lalu achieve his goals of independence and citizenship would be greatly appreciated!
