Sometimes, even our heroes need a helping hand.

K9 Cal retired from Westbrook Police Department K9 unit, May 2023.

Cal spent his career protecting our communities to include — tracking suspects, many drug seizures and successful searches for people and standing side by side with his handler through long nights and dangerous calls. Now, in retirement, he deserves the same dedication and care he once gave so selflessly.

Last week Cal was the victim of a hit and run and suffered life-threatening injuries. Thanks to quick action and emergency veterinary care, this brave dog underwent critical surgery that saved his life. After having his spleen removed he then spent time in their intensive care before returning home to his family.

He is still in a lot of pain and spends most of his days asleep on the couch. His family is just so glad to have him home.

This is an unexpected and heavy burden for his handler, who has already given so much in service alongside his loyal partner.

At this point the bills have run over $12,000.

Out of respect for his handler’s privacy and humility, this fundraiser is being created by friends and supporters who know he would never ask for help himself. But we know how much Cal means — not just to his handler, but to everyone who values the bond between officer and partner.

All funds raised will go directly toward covering the cost of surgery, follow-up care, and rehabilitation so this loyal hero can heal and enjoy his well-earned retirement.
