Have you ever wanted to welcome refugees to your home city? We have—and now, with your help, we can.
Community Refugee Sponsorship Australia (CRSA) formed in 2018 (https://refugeesponsorship.org.au) and is now assisting community groups all around Australia to sponsor refugees while also helping with the ongoing development of the federal government's new CRISP program (https://refugeesponsorship.org.au/what-we-do/crisp/)
Each community group provides practical support to a refugee or refugee family for their first year in Australia. The sponsor groups set up a house for the new arrivals and meet them at the airport. We help them practise their English, get work, settle into school, and learn how to deal with Canberra winters, magpie swooping season, Vegemite, and all the other challenges and delights of Australian life. We are their first Australian friends and we connect them to other support services as well.
The sponsorship group helps the refugees to become financially independent, and supports them financially until they can do so.
Our group has mentored three refugee families so far but if we ever have to stop supporting refugees we will donate any remaining funds to another CRSA/CRISP group. Our group started in 2020 with Felicity, Chris, Karen, Christine, Bill, and Wendy and now consists of Felicity, Chris, Karen, Christine, Carol, Leslie, and April.
