Help a Refugee be a Barrister

Hi, I- Md Al Mamun am originally from Noakhali, Bangladesh and arrived in London in January, 2011 as an International Student. I was orphaned by losing my dear father at a much tender age (6). Both of my parents finished only their primary education. Now I am a Refugee in Britain. Eventually, I decided to do a Law degree in order for standing for the people who do not have any voice and to fight against all sorts of inequalities, injustices and insecurities, despite English is my second language. I have successfully qualified as a lawyer in summer 2021by achieving Bachelor in Law (LLB) from Birkbeck, University of London to practise in England and Wales.

As such, I applied for a Bar Vocational Studies (BVS) plus Master of Laws (LLM) at City, University of London and am pleased to inform you that I have a secure place to study at the City Law School (CLS) to be a barrister where Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Mahatma Ghandi, British Prime Ministers Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair did this course. At the same time, I submitted a scholarship application to the Honourable Society of Lincoln's Inn, however sadly they declined me even for an interview, which put my possibility to go to the CLS at grave risks simply because of money. As a result, I do need some support as donors from a group of kind people to help me make my long-cherished dream true. I am in need of £19500 (Tuition Fees) as I will have a maximum amount of £11570 from Student Finance England (SFE) that will suffice to bear my maintenance costs.

I shall attribute to common good for wider communities all across the globe, as I have been looking after needy pupils in Bangladesh and in London simultaneously for at least past 20 years as an English Tutor and International English Language Testing System (IELTS) instructor to support my widow mother and innocent siblings (4) . In addition, I have been counseling asylum seekers, refugees and overseas students, as pro bono work at Rumi Centre- a charitable trust, 337 Fore Street, Edmonton Green, London since 2011. It is important to note that I have been serving this charity as a volunteer, in particular at dawn almost every-day (365) by virtue of opening the doors for the community members so that they can perform their congregational prayers peacefully. I serve them singly too.

Moreover, I previously worked for Nando’s, Sainbury, Costa Coffee, Home Bargains from 2011 to 2015; and I had served as a “Mental Health Support Worker” for Marcusandmarcus- a local company- between July 2017 and August 2019 whilst I was reading Law at Birkbeck, both of these were full-time commitments by the way. Still I did not forsake my communal responsibilities, especially for locals. I did try with might and main to aid as many individuals as possible to change their lives for betterment and improvement, including my clients at work who had had Asperger, Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Bipolar, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), etc. I am proud to share that one of my clients with autism, Bruce yang, 24 swam the English Channel from Dover to Wissant as part of a team in 2018. I was with him in the pilot boat as a Support Worker in the channel, despite having seasickness which was unknown until he had started his swim in relay.

On another personal note, my spouse is also a Final Year, Biomedical and Chemistry student at London South Bank University (LSBU), preparing for Medical Admission too and we both lost our fathers at an early stage of our lives. Our mothers are full-time housemakers and they simply do not speak or write a single English sentence. Further, we have been looking after some of our orphan nephews and nieces for their academic progression along with other family members. Quite frankly, our mothers have been fighting as well as struggling excruciatingly for our brighter futures since they ended up being widows. They stay in our native villages in Bangladesh.

Finally, I am committed and convinced I can make a positive change in our beloved world for common and wider good by being a practicing barrister and a teacher in the areas of Family Law, Human Rights, Immigration and Asylum Law. In all honesty, I badly need financial grant just to pay for my BVS fees at CLS as early as better. During this difficult time, even if you drop a penny, I would be ever grateful to you. Also, someone(s) can make the payment to the school directly on my behalf via using my student number or by being a sponsor. The Bar Course is commencing in September 2021 and I will certainly work harder to make your contributions eventful, meaningful as well as purposeful. Do not hesitate to contact me for any further information or clarity with reference to my personal journey or academic details. One can ask me any burning question or send a critical feedback too.
