My sister ,A 26-year-old pediatric nurse who dedicated her life to caring for newborn babies is now fighting to save her own future after a devastating bus crash that left both her and her mother with life-changing amputations.
My sister, Oriada, and my mother, Floresha, urgently need further lifesaving surgeries. Every operation gives doctors another chance to save as much of their lives, mobility, and independence as possible.
Our family cannot do this alone.
Today, I am asking for your help to give them the chance not only to survive, but to rebuild the lives that were changed forever in a matter of seconds.
My name is Ornela Lazaj, and I never imagined I would have to ask the kindness of strangers to help save my family.
On 30 June, my mother and my 26-year-old sister, Oriada, boarded a bus from Berat to Tirana. It was a journey they had made countless times before.
They never came home.
In a matter of seconds, a devastating bus crash changed their lives forever.
Today, my mother and my sister are both fighting for their lives in a specialist hospital in Greece.
Both have suffered catastrophic injuries.
Both have undergone life-changing amputations.
Both still face multiple major surgeries.
For my sister, the battle is far from over. Doctors are doing everything they can to save what remains of her other leg. Every operation is an attempt to preserve as much function, mobility, and independence as possible. We know her life will never be the same, but we are praying these surgeries will give her the best possible chance to reduce the extent of her disability and allow her to regain as much independence as possible.
As I write these words, my sister is preparing to undergo another major surgery this week.
This operation cannot wait.
Her surgeons are doing everything they can to save as much of her remaining leg as possible while continuing to treat the life-threatening injuries she has suffered. Our family is holding on to hope that this surgery will give her the best possible chance of preserving her independence and one day returning to the life she loves.
Oriada is only 26 years old.
She is a pediatric nurse who dedicated her life to caring for newborn babies. She has spent years comforting frightened parents, helping bring new life into the world, and caring for the smallest and most vulnerable patients with endless compassion.
She has spent her life helping others.
Now she is the one who desperately needs help.
Her greatest dream is simple.
She dreams of putting her nursing uniform back on.
She dreams of walking back into the children’s ward, caring for newborn babies again, and comforting families during the most precious moments of their lives.
The surgeries she faces now will determine how much of that dream remains possible.
We know her life will never be the same, but with the right treatment, we hope she can regain as much independence as possible and continue doing what she loves most—caring for others.
She wants to prove that disability does not define a person’s worth, and that even after unimaginable tragedy, there is still hope, purpose, and a future worth fighting for.
My mother, Floresha, is the heart of our family. She has spent her life putting everyone else before herself, working tirelessly and sacrificing everything for those she loves. Today, she is recovering from the loss of her own leg while preparing for further complex surgeries that are essential to save her life and give her the best possible chance of recovery.
The two strongest women in our family are now the two people who need help the most.
They were also the breadwinners of our family.
My father is now carrying this burden alone on a minimum wage. No ordinary family could ever prepare for the emotional and financial devastation this tragedy has brought.
The surgeries have already cost tens of thousands of euros, and both my mother and my sister still face multiple complex operations.
These are not optional procedures.
These surgeries are giving them the chance to survive. They are giving doctors the opportunity to save as much of their lives, mobility, and independence as possible. Every operation carries hope, but it also comes with an overwhelming financial burden that our family simply cannot carry alone.
We know we cannot undo what happened.
We know life will never be the same.
But together, we can change what their future looks like.
Together, we can help give my mother and my sister access to the lifesaving surgeries they urgently need.
Together, we can help preserve as much of their independence, dignity, and hope as possible.
This is my heartfelt plea to you.
Please help us give my mother and my sister the chance to keep fighting.
Every donation, no matter how small, brings them one step closer to another surgery, another chance, and another step towards rebuilding their lives.
If you are unable to donate, please consider sharing our story. One share could reach someone who is able to help change their lives forever.
If my sister has spent her life caring for strangers, today I am asking strangers to help save hers.
My sister has dedicated her life to caring for newborn babies and supporting families through some of the most precious moments of their lives. She never expected that one day she would be the one depending on the kindness of people she has never met.
Today, I am asking you to stand with her, with my mother, and with our family.
Your donation is more than financial support—it is hope. It is another chance at lifesaving surgery. It is another opportunity to preserve their independence, dignity, and future.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for opening your hearts to our family. Your compassion, generosity, prayers, and support give us strength to keep believing that brighter days are still ahead.
With endless love and gratitude,
Ornela Lazaj
