Supporting a Journalism Student’s Education in Paraguay
During my Peace Corps service in Ita Piru, Paraguay, I lived with a family who became an important part of my life. We stayed in touch after I left, and I've watched their oldest son work incredibly hard to earn admission to La Universidad Nacional de Asunción to study journalism.
The journalism program requires a professional camera for coursework — it costs about $1,350. His family has asked if I know anyone who might be able to help, and I'm sharing their request with my network here in Puerto Rico and the US.
I'm not trying to "rescue" anyone — this young man has already done the hard work of getting into the country's top university on his own merit. His family is resourceful and has supported his education every step of the way. But this specific barrier is one where my network might be able to help bridge a gap that would otherwise delay or derail his studies.
The camera isn't a luxury — it's required equipment, similar to how law students need laptops or art students need supplies. Without it, he can't complete assignments or participate fully in his program.
If you're able to contribute, any amount helps:
- $25-50 contributes toward the camera fund
- $100+ makes a significant dent in the total cost
- Sharing this campaign helps reach others who might want to contribute
I'm facilitating this fundraiser because I have access to networks and platforms that this family doesn't. The funds will go directly toward purchasing the camera required for his program. I'm studying law in Puerto Rico now, so I'm reaching out to classmates, friends, and colleagues who might be interested in contributing.
