Erica Winters. This is her story.

My name is Erica Winters. I have been a nurse for 10 years. I have spent the last 6 years of my career taking care of the smallest and sickest of babies in the NICU. A few months ago, I started to have progressively worsening pain in my right arm. It took 4 MRIs and 5 doctors before they found a large tumor inside of my upper arm bone. They biopsied the tumor and I was diagnosed with a very rare form of thyroid cancer named Hurthle cell. My cancer is considered stage 4 as it has spread to my bones. I have not been able to work since the tumor growing inside of my humerus has fractured my arm.

There are only a few hospitals in the US that have experts in this type of cancer. MD Anderson is the closest hospital that have the expert doctors that I need. I will be undergoing thyroid surgery, radioactive iodine therapy, external radiation, chemotherapy, and diagnostic testing in order to battle this cancer. This is in addition to paying my health insurance premiums and any hospital visits or medications that I need.

My husband, son, and I would appreciate any donations, no matter the size. Up until my diagnosis, I had been the breadwinner for my family while my husband was a stay at home father. I want to fight Hurthle cell cancer and be able to go back to work taking care of the babies that I love. I want to see my son grow up into an adult.
