Help Milly Get Out of Florida Already

June 2025 update: Nationally, the situation has worsened significantly. The few protections trans people have in the US are now being actively overturned by our ultra-conservative Supreme Court. Due to circumstances beyond my control involving my partners' lack of job security, I can no longer meet a target move date to California of August 2025. I am simply looking for anyone who can get me out of Florida at this point.

My name is Milly Lundin (she/her). I am a newly-out trans woman. Like many trans people, I am under extreme stress from seeing our current presidential administration systematically dismantle all recognition of transgender people and attack our rights. What's worse, I currently live in Florida; the state with the most horrendous, dehumanizing laws targeting transgender people.

Under current Florida law, trans people face the following restrictions (and more) that are not faced by people of other groups:

  • Cannot get their identification changed to match their gender identity; on top of this, the state has stated an intent to prosecute current holders of gender-affirming documentation as committing fraud;
  • Are faced with onerous requirements for maintaining access to gender-affirming care in any capacity, including redundant and expensive psychiatric evaluations, suicide risk assessments, bone density screenings, and more (struck down, but these requirements are still allowed to be enforced because of an appeals court stay);
  • Cannot access gender-affirming care if not previously receiving it, due to laws prohibiting non-physicians from prescribing this care; and even if previously receiving it, are required to sign an "informed consent" form that binds them to submit to the above-mentioned requirements;
  • Cannot get any form of public or private insurance coverage for gender-affirming care, as insurers are banned by the state from covering it;
  • Cannot use public restrooms congruent with their gender identity, lest they be charged with misdemeanor trespassing;
  • If put in prison, are forcibly taken off of gender-affirming care and forced into conversion therapy to suppress their gender identity.

As things become increasingly bleak for trans people across the US, I naturally feel unsafe in the state that deigns to be the least-safe state for trans people to exist in. Although my coming-out to my parents was received with compassion, I fear reprisal or firing if I were to come out at my workplace (n.b.: I work for a state institution), and hiring, housing, and other forms of discrimination if I were to live openly. My access to care is nonexistent, and my ability to openly express myself is actively suppressed by the state government. The few existing laws that protect trans people are flimsy and unlikely to be enforced; and more likely to be overturned; in our current political environment.

I am doing as much as I can within my ability to raise funds on my own, including participating in gig economy jobs such as Uber, but as a part-time worker who constantly feels the crunch of working a daytime shift I do not feel I can accomplish this on my own. While my partners do their best to help me achieve my goals, they too have difficulty with funds; Finley only works part-time, while Amy is reliant on contract work that primarily pays monthly, and most of their funds go to rent costs. In addition to making ends meet with the money I have already saved, I am hoping this GoFundMe is able to fill the remaining gap.
