My name is Andrea, and I am a Spanish teacher and a mom of two little girls.

Recently, I was incredibly honored to receive a grant to attend a College Board Summer Institute for AP Spanish Language and Culture in Sevilla, Spain. This program helps teachers grow professionally so we can better support our students and bring richer cultural experiences into our classrooms.

The grant covers the workshop itself (about $1,800), which I am extremely grateful for. However, it does not cover travel, lodging, meals, or other expenses, which I must pay for on my own.

I have been teaching Spanish for years, but I have never had the opportunity to visit Spain. Being able to learn directly in Sevilla — the language, culture, history, and daily life — would allow me to bring authentic experiences back to my classroom and to the students I teach.

At the same time, I am also the mom of two young daughters (ages 4 and 2). The idea of leaving them for a week is not easy. But I also want them to grow up seeing that even as mothers with many responsibilities, we can continue learning, growing, and pursuing meaningful opportunities.

A colleague recently told me something that really stayed with me:

“What a gift it is for children to watch their mother prioritize her growth, professionally and personally.”

This trip would not only help me become a stronger teacher, but it would also allow me to show my daughters that learning and dreams do not stop when we become parents.
