Help a Loving Mother Keep Her Children

My best friend has been through more than anyone should ever have to endure, and now she’s facing the unimaginable—losing custody of her two children simply because she got sick. We have been best friends since we were five years old, and I have never seen her back down from a challenge. She has worked tirelessly to provide for her children, but chronic illness has stolen her ability to work. She has chronic hypoxia and is currently undergoing testing for possible heart failure, requiring her to be on oxygen full-time. She lost her job due to her illness and is surviving on just $600 a month while waiting for state disability, which has yet to come through.

She and her children live in Florida, and now her ex-husband has chosen this vulnerable moment to try to take full custody, despite their current 50/50 agreement. He knows she is struggling financially and is counting on this to work in his favor. But her children, a 12-year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy, do not want to be taken from their mother. I have heard them say so myself.

This is not just a custody battle—it is about protecting these children. I have visited multiple times and personally witnessed his verbal abuse. I have seen pictures of the holes he punched in the walls of their home. She has also alleged that he physically assaulted her, which is one of the reasons she finally made the decision to leave. No child should be forced into the care of someone with this history, especially when they are begging to stay with their mother.

She has sold everything of value, but she is still $3,000 short of what she needs to pay her lawyer. If she can’t come up with the money by April 4, she will lose legal representation—and with it, likely her children. This $3,000 is just to cover the fee she currently owes. Anything raised beyond that will go toward future legal fees or helping her survive until her federal aid comes through, or—if her health improves—until she is able to return to work.

She is a wonderful, loving mother who has always put her kids first. She is fighting with everything she has, but she needs help.

Please, if you can, donate to help her keep her family together. Every dollar makes a difference, and if you can’t donate, please share her story. No mother should lose her children just because she got sick. Let’s stand with Megan and show her that she is not alone.
