Help a Jewish girl recieve a Jewish education

In September of 2022, after 17 years of marriage, I got the courage to separate from my husband due to domestic violence. I had been a stay at home mother to my five children, who range in age from 3 years old to 16 years old. I am now on income assistance as I try to rebuild our lives and heal from the abuse that happened.

My oldest daughter, who is just finishing Grade 10 here at the local Jewish High School, has spent the last year immersing herself in Judaism. For her, it has given her purpose and a way of making sense of the world, given the chaos and hurt at the break up of our family. It has given her structure. Vancouver does not have a large religious community and currently, there are no religious high schools here. All of my daughters’ friends have been sent to boarding schools around the world and the children in the Jewish high school here are not people who share the same goals and values as my daughter. She feels very lonely and isolated here in Vancouver. She is very active in all the Jewish organizations she can be. She is on the board of NCSY, has been an active member of the Hasbara program, participates in CTeen, works in the children’s program at shul on shabbat, as well as the weekly Hebrew School. She studies with the school Rabbi and does very well in her Judaic studies. What she is missing though, is the ability to learn with other people who share the same goals and values. To be able to further her spiritual growth and learning.

She applied to Ulpana Orot in Toronto, and has been accepted. We found her a family to board with. However, the funding that the school receives for tuition subsidies is allocated to residents of Toronto only. The only barrier between my daughter and this school is financial. Between tuition costs, room and board and flights back and forth, the estimated costs are $37000. This is impossible for me to pay and the children’s father currently does not pay child support.

My daughter is a beautiful girl, well liked in our community. She is smart and determined and I have no doubt that she will be successful in whatever she decides to do. She has dreams of becoming an Ambassador for Israel. I am so proud of her and, like any mother, I so want to make her dreams come true. I want her to be happy. I want her to smile. Please help me in making my daughter’s pursuit of becoming a real Bas Torah come true. Thank you for your time.
