hey guys, my name is shekinah (but most people call me shak). i’m a full time college student with a part time job who loves to surf, roller skate, spend time with my puppy and boogie to good music. my mom is my rock who has done the most amazing job of raising and providing for me and my 4 siblings. today was a rough day. today my mom and i received the devastating news that my health insurance won’t fully cover my diabetic supplies.
i was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 13 years old. up until last year i was strictly using insulin injections and finger pricks to check my glucose numbers, which made it extremely hard to regulate my diabetes. i was unhealthy, sad, angry and unaware of how terrible my body actually felt due to my high blood sugars. my A1C was greater than 14 (a normal persons A1C is lower than 5.6). at that point i was days away from hospitalization. out of desperation for my health my mom switched health insurances so i would be eligible for an insulin pump and CGM (continuous glucose monitor).
in november of last year i finally got my pump and my numbers have never been better. i finally feel healthy and less anxious about my future. my new doctor has been kindly giving us dexcom CGM samples until my insurance was able to get back to me about coverage and copays. today we got the call saying not only will i have to pay $150 every month for my pump supplies but also over $300 a month for my dexcom CGM supplies on top of monthly insurance and deductible payments. unfortunately this amount is nearly impossible for us to pay each month. it makes me sad that i have to create something like this in order to live a happy healthy life. it costs around $5k for a full year of supplies, i never thought that it would cost so much just for me to survive. to some it may not seem important or necessary but without this technology my quality of life is threatened.
i decided to make this gofundme because i’ve realized, even though it’s hard sometimes, it’s okay to ask for help especially during a time of desperation, anything helps sending peace, love and light to you all☀️✨☮️ i hope 2022 treats everyone well :)
