Just over a year ago, my dear friend Shawn—at only 32 years old—took a bold leap and launched his own plumbing company. Like countless small business owners, he invested everything: his time, energy, and heart. For the past year, he’d leave home at 8 a.m. and often not return until 1 or 2 a.m., all to support his family, build a brighter future, and create something truly his own.

On New Year’s Eve, around 10 p.m., Shawn was at his shop, wrapping up to head home for the night. By 11 p.m., his wife Amanda grew worried—no texts, no calls answered. At 11:30 p.m., a devastating call from the police changed everything.

In a heartbreaking freak accident, Shawn was struck and run over by his own service truck. The heavy-duty vehicle had been having transmission issues, popping out of gear unexpectedly. It rolled forward, inflicting life-threatening injuries.

Rushed to Ventura County Medical Center (VCMC), Shawn is now battling for his life in the ICU. His injuries are extensive and severe:

• 22 broken ribs

• Both femurs fractured

• Broken hip

• Fractured pelvis

• Collapsed lung

• Broken sacrum that will entail a transfer to another hospital that specializes in this rare break

He faces multiple surgeries, a prolonged ICU stay, and a grueling recovery ahead. Unable to work, Shawn’s young business is at risk, and his family’s financial stability hangs in the balance.

Shawn, Amanda, and their loved ones are grappling with profound fear, grief, soaring medical costs, lost wages, and an uncertain road ahead.
