Last night, after getting home late from studying on campus, I came across a man walking in the street through snow up to his boots. It was freezing, dark, and he was clearly exhausted. I pulled over to check on him.

His name is Michael, and he was heading to the Downers Grove Metra station after finishing his shift at Walmart. I gave him a ride, and during those few minutes he told me something I still can’t shake:

Michael walks 10 miles every single day, from the Darien Walmart to the Downers Grove train station, because the last bus stops running before he gets off work. He commutes all the way from the West Side of Chicago because this was the nearest Walmart hiring. So he walks, in darkness, in snow, in freezing temperatures, every day.

As he warmed up in the car, he told me about his family. Michael is in his 30s and a father of nine children. He said he wants to show his sons that there is always an honest, legal way to provide. And he wants his daughters to see what true responsibility looks like in a man. He didn’t complain. He didn’t tell the story for sympathy. He shared it like it was simply what needed to be done.

Listening to him, I realized how much he carries on his shoulders without shortcuts and without asking for anything.

Why I’m Asking for Support:

I’m asking for your help because no one working this hard to support their family should be walking miles in freezing weather just to get home. Michael is doing everything right –– showing up, putting in the hours, and providing the best he can.

This is one of those rare moments when a community can step in and change someone’s life in a real, tangible way. Michael never asked for help, but clearly deserves it.
