Help a Gorge Legend “Bingen Bart” Rise from the Ashes!

If you’ve spent any time in the Columbia River Gorge, chances are you know Bart (Bingen Bart to many!). He’s one of those rare humans whose presence leaves a mark—whether you know him only by his voice giving you a wind and snow report, or you met him on the water, in one of his shops, chatting over beers at MoCo or the Ruins. He’s been part of the soul of this place for over 30 years: a pioneer windsurfer, a small-town storyteller, a business owner, a neighbor, and a reliable friend to countless people across the region and the PNW.

Last week, he lost everything in the Rowena wildfire—his motorhome, several vehicles, his sailing/skiing/biking/motorcycle gear, all of his clothing -Everything! What he hasn't lost is his shining spirit, and the love of the community that surrounds him. Through all of this time he is still caring for his ailing family members and helping friends with their current challenges, because Bart helps people!

Now, it’s our turn to show up for him.

We’re rallying to help him quickly get back on his feet—starting with a 4x4 truck (he has already found as a car guy) that will also be a part of the clean up and rebuild mission, some important sailing gear that allows him to take a break and do what brings him the most joy, and all of the basic essentials for day-to-day work and life.

If we reach our first goal of 15,000 we will try and reach the next level of fundraising to help him get into a motorhome, so he can continue to build his dream of something more permanent in the gorge.

He’s slowly taking stock—starting over comes with a lot of unknowns. For now, he’s focused on replacing only what’s essential. With so much still uncertain about where and how he’ll live next, we’re being mindful not to overwhelm him with physical items just yet. That said, if you’re setting things aside for when the time is right—thank you. Your care and generosity mean the world.

We’re doing this for a man who’s shown up for us again and again—a true local who gives generously and has spent decades reading the wind, riding the storms, and showing others how to navigate the waters. Now it’s our turn to help him catch the wind again. Every gift helps him steady the sail and move toward what’s next. Thank you for being part of his village.
