Help a friend get thru anal cancer treatment

We are raising this go fund me for a newly diagnosed 70 year young Anal Cancer ‘sister’ who without your support may not be able to travel to and receive her treatment. Her treatment starts the end of January and because treatment is scheduled rapidly, many normal everyday tasks that would normally be easy to do have to be considered. A patient receiving treatment will quickly be unable to perform daily tasks such as housecleaning, driving, even walking.
Anal cancer is a rare cancer effecting approximately 7000 people in the US annually. You may remember that Farrah Fawcett died from a reoccurrence of Anal Cancer after her initial treatment. There is little financial support for Anal Cancer patients. Most doctors haven’t ever seen Anal Cancer and many patients, men and women, go undiagnosed until the cancer has spread. The treatment is short but horrific as described by radiation oncologists. The current protocol is chemotherapy with concurrent pelvic radiation, meaning you wear a bag with a pump for the chemo for 96 hrs the first and last four days while receiving up to 60 gz of radiation for 32-35 days everyday, 5 days a week. A lifetime dose of radiation in a little over a month! It causes severe burns from the waist to the thigh, intestinal issues, severe diarrhea , nausea, fatigue and a host of long term side effects. But it is 85-95% effective when caught early.
About us, Team ACC are anal cancer survivors , and thankful for living. We wouldn’t have been able to complete our treatment without the support of family and friends as well as a great treatment center close by. We are members of a women’s only Anal Cancer support group. Within that group we support newly diagnosed women and provide support during and after treatment and we grieve together when a sister looses her battle. We don’t have the support the ‘pink’ ladies do. Our goal is to help each other and give support, and give back to other women who are recently diagnosed with Anal Cancer.
Our ‘sister, who will receive lodging from this effort, lives in the mountain region of New Hampshire and it is her dream to hike until the end. Her cancer diagnosis was never in her plan. Unfortunately cancer treatment options are not available to her without traveling a far distance to Maine every weekday for up to 35 days. She will not be able to drive herself after the first week or two due to the burns, nausea, fatigue and intestinal issues.
Temporarily residing close to her cancer treatment hospital that has both chemo and radiation equipment will cost approximately $3000. for her to stay in a motel or rooming situation during her treatment. As you might guess, at 70 on Medicaid and Social Security, there are not enough funds to cover this very unexpected additional expense. And time is of the essence. We have located two lodging options in the Southern Maine area where her treatment is.
Can you help today?
Any amount would be greatly appreciated. Together we can raise this small amount of money and help her get to the treatment she most desperately needs. She will have a ride everyday provided by the group.
She doesn’t know these funds are being raised and probably wouldn’t do this herself. But rest assured, every penny raised will be used to cover her lodging, transportation and personal needs while she is in treatment.
It is with the emotional support of a group of women, almost three hundred strong, that have survived anal cancer, that we help where others will not. There are a great many organizations out there but none that support our rare cancer financially. As a group we raise funds when we can out of our own pockets, but this is a special instance where the amount needed exceeds our resources and the clock is ticking. We don’t have much time to raise these funds so that we can secure the lodging she needs.
We will keep you updated as her treatment progresses and are hoping that one day soon she can proudly say she is NED! ( no evidence of disease) and she will let us post her picture. For now, please donate what you can, even $5. As cumulatively we can meet this goal.
Thank you so very much in advance,
Team ACC- Sue, Claudia, Becky, Jeannine, Peggy F, Karen, Kimmie, Peggy B, Lucretia, Laurie, Naomi
