Help A Former Student In Need

Donation protected
A former student of mine is in need of emergency financial assistance, and I would really appreciate your help raising the necessary funds.  Her situation sheds light on how the system can often work against some of our hardest working citizens, simply for having little to no money.  We need to raise this money for her within the next 24 hours, so I thank you in advance for considering this!

Over the past year, she has worked as a full-time, well-respected frontline healthcare worker and is simultaneously in nursing school as a full-time student.  Her GPA last semester was a 4.0, and she has achieved all this despite EVERY obstacle life can throw at a person.  She is truly one of the most inspirational people I have ever met, has worked harder than anyone I know to make her way in the world, and meets every challenge with an unwavering faith in God and sense of commitment to success.  There is not a single person I know who deserves help in a time of need more than she.

As she was driving home from the deathbed of her mother yesterday, she was told by a court-appointed probation officer that if she does not pay the remaining balance on a traffic violation ticket by TOMORROW (Thursday 6/25/2020), she will be served a warrant and remain in jail until her next scheduled court appearance.  She was scheduled to appear in court last week but due to her mother's decline she was called out of state to her mother's side, and though she has told this to her probation officer, she has not yet been granted an extension or any assistance. Prior to this time, she was making regular payments toward the total amount, had already paid over 50% of the original total, and had the money to pay the remaining balance.  However, due to repeated financial hardships, she has incurred late fees and the balance has continued to rise.  Now, her mother's health crisis and impending funeral costs have left her with 76 cents to her name, as she is the primary family member responsible for her mother's end of life care.  This has tragically coincided with the end of her payment plan extension and, apparently, with the limitations of the compassion and understanding of her probation officer.  As you can imagine, she is incredibly traumatized and demoralized, and for the first time ever in the over ten years I have known her, she feels defeated.  I can't see this happen to her.

We cannot let her be put in jail for failure to pay this fine.  This is a grave injustice to a person who is working overtime to serve the public and make a better life for herself, all while living through a huge personal tragedy.  The fundraising goal is for the exact amount of her remaining ticket balance, and to give her some solid financial breathing room as she rebuilds her finances from scratch.  Any amount of money you can spare toward her cause is greatly appreciated!  I know we can do this for her if we pull together to show her that there is still good in the world, and that she has a community of wonderful people pulling for her, all across the country.

Thank you so much for your consideration, donation, or just for sharing her story so others might be able to contribute!

Lots of love and gratitude,
Chiara Hoyt
