Hi, my name is Laylah Williams, and I am a first-generation college student who just completed my freshman year at the University of California, Berkeley with a 3.9 GPA. I am currently experiencing financial hardship and am organizing this fundraiser to raise the funds needed to complete my Bachelor’s degree in Music Psychology and Music Production.

Although I was originally accepted to UC Berkeley on a full-ride scholarship, I was recently notified that I would lose it due to budget cuts. Throughout my time at Berkeley, I endured endless racism and discrimination, prompting my interest in transferring to an HBCU.

I was recently accepted into Xavier University of Louisiana and Dillard University, but as a transfer student, I did not receive the financial aid necessary to fund my full education. As a result, I will have to pay $25,000 out of pocket per year, which I cannot afford, despite currently working multiple jobs and constantly applying for scholarships.

In spite of this hardship, I intend to complete my double-major in Music Psychology and Music Production, with a focus on music theory, and later pursue an MBA. Attending an HBCU will allow me to learn in a space centered on Black history and excellence and to be my authentic self. Through music psychology, I hope to celebrate the diverse identities and expressions of young Black students who’ve been told they’re “too much” and to help Black youth learn to use psychology and music as tools to develop better coping mechanisms.

With your support and generosity, I will not only further my education but also move closer to my goal of creating a space where young people like me can grow and heal. No matter the amount, everything helps me take one step closer to pursuing a path dedicated to uplifting not only myself but also others in similar circumstances. Thank you for your consideration.

(Due to the fact that GoFundMe takes a significant percentage of the funds raised, I would be most appreciative if you would consider sending a donation to my personal Venmo (@Laylah-Williams-1) or Cash App ($laylayMW25). Every contribution is deeply appreciated.
