Help a First-Gen Scholar Get Back to College
Hi, my name is Berry — I’m a first-generation Haitian-American college student, and I’m humbly asking for help to return to school after an unexpected medical crisis changed everything.
My Story
I was awarded a full-ride scholarship through QuestBridge to attend Emory University — one of the top schools in the country. As someone from a low-income household, this opportunity meant everything. I made it to junior year, majoring in Economics with a minor in Business.
But last fall, I experienced a mental health emergency that forced me to take a medical leave. During my time away, I worked on healing — but returning has come with a heavy price.
Why I Need Help
Because I left campus early, I was charged thousands in unexpected housing fees even though I didn’t stay the full term. That added to:
Unpaid medical bills
Growing credit card debt from survival expenses
No stable place to live, and no credit or savings to secure housing now
To return to school this fall, I must pay a $4,000 balance on my student account. If I don’t, I won’t be allowed to register — despite being readmitted and so close to graduating.
I Almost Gave Up…
I’ve considered dropping out. It would be easier — but I didn’t come this far just to stop here. I’m not only doing this for myself, but for my family, my community, and the younger version of me who dreamed of breaking generational cycles.
What Your Support Will Cover
I'm asking for $10,000 to help get back on my feet and finish what I started:
$4,000 to clear my student account balance so I can re-register
$2,000 for a housing deposit and basic living expenses
$4,000 for medical bills and essential health-related expenses
Every dollar helps me get closer to graduating and building a future that once felt impossible.
Final Words
Thank you for reading this. Even if you can’t donate, sharing this helps more than you know.
With love and hope,
— Berry C. (FGLI Scholar + Fighter)
