Farmworker families across Yolo County are struggling like never before. This fundraiser is for one family in particular who I have known for many years and which now finds itself in particularly hard circumstances, including serious food insecurity, difficulty paying rent, and lack of health insurance.
The goal of this fundraiser is to raise enough money to allow this family to pay at least 2 months rent and groceries. Crucially this will allow the minor in the family to not have to work in the fields everyday, allowing him to focus on online school in order to graduate, as well as limit his family's exposure to COVID-19.
This will not cover every one of this family's needs. Nor will it do anything for other farmworker families facing difficulties. Significant policy change will need to occur before hunger is eliminated among the essential workers who feed us, including immigration reform, higher wages, and a stronger social safety net. This fundraiser will however reach a real farmworker family in great need of assistance in Yolo County, California.
