(Espanol abajo) On an ordinary morning last summer, S. was driving to work, stopping along the way to pick up two coworkers, as he did most days. Just a few blocks short of his job site in DC, agents blocked his car, and everyone in it was handcuffed and taken away. His phone was confiscated. His family had no idea what had happened to him until a video of the arrest was sent to his workplace.

Over the next four and a half months, S. was moved through multiple detention facilities in two states, while M. was left at home alone with their six children, ages 2 to 19, trying to hold everything together. He is home now, and just got another job, working days. M. works nights. They arranged it that way so their children are never left alone.

But their lives have been permanently altered. They leave the house only for groceries and work. The little ones ask to go outside and play. M. says no, because she's afraid. And that breaks her heart, because she knows her children don't deserve this.

They are not just financially devastated—they are emotionally exhausted. Legal fees, months of lost income, and the ongoing cost of simply surviving have left this family in crisis.

Una mañana cualquiera del verano pasado, S. manejaba al trabajo y, como casi todos los días, se detuvo en el camino a recoger a sus dos compañeros. A solo unas cuadras de su lugar de trabajo en Washington D. C., unos agentes bloquearon su carro y los esposaron y se llevaron a todos los que iban dentro. Le confiscaron el teléfono. Su familia no tenía ni idea de lo que le había pasado hasta que les enviaron un vídeo del arresto a su lugar de trabajo.

Durante los siguientes cuatro meses y medio, S. fue trasladado a varios centros de detención en dos estados, mientras que M. se quedó sola en casa con sus seis hijos, de entre 2 y 19 años, tratando de mantener todo en orden. Ahora él está en casa y acaba de conseguir otro trabajo, en horario diurno. M. trabaja por las noches. Lo han organizado así para que sus hijos nunca se queden solos.

Pero sus vidas han cambiado para siempre. Solo salen de casa para ir al supermercado y al trabajo. Los pequeños piden salir a jugar. M. les dice que no, porque tiene miedo. Y eso le rompe el corazón, porque sabe que sus hijos no se merecen esto.

No solo están devastados económicamente, sino que también están agotados emocionalmente. Los gastos legales, los meses de ingresos perdidos y el costo continuo de simplemente sobrevivir han dejado a esta familia en crisis.
