Hello, I am currently living in Paraguay but have to keep my name and organization private due to security reasons. I am fundraising on behalf of a neighboring family who has become incredibly close to me. They have been facing unimaginable hardship after their father suffered a devastating accident at work four months ago.

Rather than telling their story from my perspective, I want to share it through the eyes of Victor, their 18-year-old son:

“I had just finished work and arrived at my high school when I got a message that my dad had an accident. At first, I brushed it off, thinking there must be a mistake—my dad doesn’t have accidents. In 40 years of working in construction, he’s never had one. But something inside me told me to confirm, so I asked what color pants he was wearing. That morning, I had watched him leave for work in his usual brown, cement-covered khakis. When my friend responded that the injured man was wearing brown pants and a hat, chills ran down my spine—I knew it was him.

I jumped on my moto and rushed to the worksite, my mind blank, my heart racing. When I arrived, all I saw was blood. Only blood. I asked where my father was, and they told me my uncle had taken him to the hospital. I didn’t know if he was alive or dead. I didn’t know the full story, but from the blood covering the street, I knew it was serious. My mind raced to the worst. I asked my aunt how bad it was. I told her to be honest. She looked me in the eyes and said my dad was in critical condition. All I could do was pray.”

Victor’s father, Don Emiliano, had gotten his arm caught and twisted in a concrete mixer. Doctors initially told him amputation was likely due to severe nerve damage and blood loss. However, after being transferred to a specialist in Asunción, Paraguay’s capital, they were able to save his arm through an intense and complex surgery.

During his three-month recovery, Don Emiliano was completely bedridden, unable to move. His wife, Ña Antonia, slept on the hospital floor beside him, struggling to afford food and necessities in the expensive capital city. She expressed immense gratitude for a doctor from their hometown who occasionally brought them yogurt and crackers to eat. Meanwhile, Victor remained home alone, balancing his final year of high school while working, cooking, cleaning, and managing his own expenses—all while carrying the weight of uncertainty about his father’s health. In December, he received his diploma alone, without his parents by his side.

Today, Don Emiliano is alive, and for that, his family thanks God. Victor even fulfilled a promise to walk 100 km in gratitude for his father’s second chance. Their faith and resilience have carried them this far, but now they are facing severe financial struggles.
