Two weeks ago, while working on a few residential contracts in Southern California, we were rear-ended by a drunk driver traveling 60-80 mph while we were making a right turn into a gas station. Soon after, my wife was rushed to the nearest hospital because she had a head injury, loss of memory, plus spinal and neck pains.
Soon after the visit, she had to be sent to a hospital that specializes in the brain to check for bleeding and other tests that they weren't equipped to do at the initial hospital. After 3 days, her tests came back negative, but she was told that it would take at least 9 weeks to fully recover. Her speech and memory loss come and go. It's hard to explain what she's going through, but the best way to explain it is that the activity in her brain changes periodically from normal to abnormal depending on stress and activity levels. The more stimulated her brain becomes, the more her speech slows down to where she can barely pronounce words. The first week out of the hospital, she wasn't able to send messages to her lower body to walk and had to be in a wheelchair until recently.
Our income comes from our concrete business that we independently run and work ourselves, and right now, she's not able to work or be alone at home because she still forgets where she's at and needs reassurance that everything is okay. This situation makes it nearly impossible for us to generate income because I have to be here for my wife. I thought twice about not doing this because it's a pride thing and I don't like handouts, but this is a situation that I have no control over and she needs me here with her during this season in our life.
