As a social worker, I have been an advocate, helping clients navigate social service system to access needed supports.
Ironically, I have helped find housing for hundreds of RI residents as part of my job in public service. Each story was unique, and level of challenges varied but what they all had in common was despair.
My situation is no different, I am an unhoused single mother of an adult daughter with special needs.
My daughter’s medical expenses have caused me to spend my savings as well as amass credit card debt. This debt has devastated my credit score.
I have been offered short term space for daughter only. I am her mother, and it is my job to provide a safe living situation for her. She is a vibrant person who loves life, photography and movies. Out of respect for her privacy I will only tell you that her behaviors have been a barrier to shared living situations.
The good news is that we have a housing opportunity, so this is a short-term need and once I have funds for security deposit and first month’s rent, we can move into safe and stable housing.
I am asking anyone who has ever been where I now am to consider donation of any amount.
Honestly, putting myself out here like this is uncomfortable and humbling.
My plan is to pay it forward in small and large ways as soon as I can!
