Help a Dedicated Nurse Fight Cancer

9/23-Update. Though insurance coverage has kicked in, so her treatments are being covered, she is living off from a very small income from SSI until her SSDI kicks in which isnt for a few more months. She has depleted any savings she has, and is living of credit cards. Any ongoing support is helpful to her for gas to get to treatments, any urgent bills, and personal care items. She continues with chemo for an additional round and will have ongoing immunotherapy once chemo completes. Thank you for all you have done

6/13- Update: Christus Cancer Center has accepted her for treatment. She was approved for some funding to help with treatment. Funds have been used for medications, appointments, and some basic bills. We are working to put remaining funds towards a portable oxygen concentrator, so she will have this to get to her chemo. These little devices are costly, but are the final goal we have to try to get her in a good spot while she navigates all of these changes. I intend to keep paying as many of her bills as I can with any remaining funds until her SSDI kicks in. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

6/1- Update: Still waiting for final acceptance from Christus for chemo, next dose is due in 2 weeks. We have submitted all the documents to request assistance for treatment. Urgent SSI&SSDI application has been completed, awaiting determination. Working to find an Inogen or different brand portable oxygen concentrator before she begins treatment, so she has a tank for treatment. At her most recent appointment without her oxygen her pulse ox was 80% with activity and only reached 86% with rest. She needs oxygen for all activity. Funds have been used for her appointments and medications. All are private pay right now. Anything extra outside of medical needs, I am hoping to help apply towards some living expenses. Losing her income over night will have devastating effects and she will never be able to keep up with the basic needs.

5/23- Update: My mom was discharged from the hospital on 5/19. Before discharge, she was administered cycle 1 of her chemo which includes Cisplatin and Etoposide. She will need several cycles which are administered 4 weeks apart. Her next dose is now 3 weeks away. Methodist Hospital did not set her up with any services. They placed a port, and told her to call around to find an oncologist. They did not even send a single referral to any cancer center for further treatment. I have been working tirelessly trying to find her an outpatient cancer center to help her. Christus Spohn Cancer Center has been very helpful in trying to arrange things before her next dose. The lack of outpatient arrangements Methodist Hospital gave her because of being un-insured is inexcusable. She deserves treatment, she deserves to fight for her life if that is what she wishes. The last thing I want her to worry about is money and being able to obtain the needed chemo. We appreciate every single donation and prayer so far!

My mom was diagnosed with Extensive Small Cell Lung Cancer and is coming to the community for help. A registered nurse who has served the sick and vulnerable for over three decades is now in desperate need of help herself. Unimaginable that she is now the patient. She never saw her role changing and flipping her to the other side. She is not offered insurance at her job helping the developmentally disabled. Due to her and her shared household income, she was denied Medicaid. She is only 59 years old and is in for the fight of her life. Her oncology team is offering her palliative chemo, and she desperately wants to fight. She isn't ready to give in to this horrible disease, but already she is being asked to make a payment to establish outpatient chemo. I am working on trying to find her grants or charity chemo programs, but she is no longer going to be able to work while she does chemo, so making any payments to keep fighting won't be possible. Any funds received will go towards the payment arrangements she makes for treatment, or simply survival money while she is out of work. She believes in the power of prayer, so if you cannot donate, she needs a prayer from you.
