MI HISTORIA

¡Hola a todos! Soy Nico, un joven de Medellín, Colombia. Estoy convencido de que mi proyecto de vida gira en torno a mejorar a mi ciudad y a mi país, y creo firmemente que la mejor manera de hacerlo es creando empresa de una forma sostenible y socialmente responsable. Sin embargo, como eso es una meta bastante grande, sé que me debo preparar y desarrollar bastante como persona para poder lograrla. Por eso, desde hace tiempo me propuse estudiar mi pregrado en el exterior, de manera que pueda ampliar mi visión del mundo y adquirir conocimientos valiosos que me permitirán volver a Medellín y cumplir mi propósito.

Durante el pasado año y medio, busqué por mi cuenta cómo aplicar a universidades en el extranjero, presenté exámenes, escribí ensayos, recogí cartas de recomendación y finalmente, con muchísimo esfuerzo, logré que una idea se convirtiera en postulaciones a las mejores universidades del mundo. Aunque las universidades que apliqué son extremadamente selectivas y estaba compitiendo con los mejores estudiantes de alrededor del mundo, logré que me becaran en Duke Kunshan University, una universidad localizada cerca de Shanghái, creada entre Duke University (una de las mejores de EEUU y del mundo) y Wuhan University (una de las mejores de China).

Estoy muy agradecido con la universidad, puesto que me dieron una beca del 85% de costos de matrícula (equivalente a 47.498 USD/año), pero dado que debo asumir los costos de vida y tiquetes aéreos, el 15% de costos de matrícula restante resulta una cantidad que me impediría ir a cumplir mi sueño. Por eso he creado esta campaña.

Tengo hasta el final del día del 1 de Mayo para reservar mi cupo en la universidad. Siempre he sido muy independiente y he conseguido las cosas por mi cuenta, pero en esta ocasión, esta campaña significa mi última esperanza. Sé que conseguir los fondos en menos de 48 horas es una tarea compleja y que las posibilidades están en mi contra, pero, como he hecho durante este año y medio con cada dificultad del proceso, voy a hacer todo lo que humanamente pueda hasta el último minuto.

PREGUNTAS QUE PUEDES TENER ANTES DE DONAR

1. ¿Por qué la meta de esta iniciativa está en Euros? ¿Puedo donar desde cualquier parte del mundo? ¿Qué hago si la página me aparece en Francés?

Gofundme sólo permite a residentes de determinados países iniciar campañas en su plataforma. Como Colombia no está dentro de los países autorizados, esta campaña fue iniciada por Hugo Poliart, un ciudadano Belga que tiene estrechos vínculos con mi familia. Como la moneda de Bélgica es el Euro, la meta de esta iniciativa está expresada en tal divisa. Sin embargo, puedes donar desde cualquier parte del mundo sin ningún problema. Aunque tanto el video como la descripción están en Español, es posible que la página te aparezca en Francés (dado que este es uno de los idiomas usados en Bélgica, que es donde se inició la campaña).

2. ¿Qué pasará con mi donación si no logras recaudar los recursos suficientes para ir a estudiar a China?

Debido al poco tiempo que tenemos, soy totalmente consciente que eso es una posibilidad grande. En caso de que no logremos la meta, me quedaré estudiando en Medellín y el 100% de las donaciones recogidas irán destinadas a ayudar a jóvenes de Medellín con el pago de costos relacionados con su educación media y superior (es decir, ayudar a jóvenes con dificultades económicas a pagar su matrícula o a conseguir insumos necesarios para continuar su educación dignamente durante estos tiempos de crisis).

3. ¿Qué me garantiza que mi donación vaya exclusivamente a apoyar a esta causa?

Gofundme es la plataforma de Crowdfunding más grande del mundo. Cuando donas a mi causa, tu pago está asegurado y llega directamente a la plataforma, la cual hace un estricto proceso de verificación para asegurarse de que los recursos de las personas que me apoyaron se destinen a la causa explicada. 4. ¿Cuáles son los costos relacionados con ir a la universidad? ¿Cuáles cubrirá mi donación?

En caso de lograr nuestro objetivo antes de la fecha indicada, la totalidad de lo recogido irá destinada a contribuir al 15% del pago de matrícula que no es cubierto por la beca. Esto corresponde a 33.528 USD desagregados en 8 pagos de 4191 USD semestrales. Con mis ingresos y los de mi familia, sólo podré, año tras año, cubrir con mucho esfuerzo los costos de vida (alojamiento, tiquetes aéreos, gastos personales, alimentación, insumos académicos y seguro médico), por lo que esta campaña ayudará a garantizar que pueda pagar la matrícula durante toda mi estadía en la universidad.

MY STORY

Hello everyone! I'm Nico, a young man from Medellin, Colombia. I am convinced that my life project revolves around improving my city and my country, and I firmly believe that the best way to do it is by creating a sustainable and socially responsible business. However, as this is a big goal, I know that I must prepare and develop myself as a person in order to achieve it. That is why I decided years ago that I would do everything I can for studying my undergraduate degree abroad, so that I can broaden my vision of the world and acquire valuable knowledge that will allow me to return to Medellín and fulfill my purpose.

During the past year and a half, I searched on my own how to apply to universities abroad, took exams, wrote essays, collected letters of recommendation, and finally, with a lot of effort, I managed to turn an idea into applications to the best universities in the world. Although the universities I applied to are extremely selective and I was competing with the best students from around the world, I managed to get a scholarship from Duke Kunshan University, a university located nearby Shanghai, created between Duke University (one of the best in the US and the world) and Wuhan University (one of the best in China).

I am very grateful to the university because they gave me a scholarship of 85% of tuition costs (equivalent to 47,498 USD/year), but since I have to assume the costs of living and airfare, the remaining 15% of tuition costs is an amount that would prevent me from going to fulfill my dream. That is why I have created this campaign.

I have until the end of the day on May 1st to reserve my place at the university. 1. Why is the goal of this initiative in Euros? Can I donate from anywhere in the world?

Gofundme only allows residents of certain countries to start campaigns on its platform. As Colombia is not among the authorized countries, this campaign was started by Hugo Poliart, a Belgian citizen who has close ties with my family. As Belgium's currency is the Euro, the goal of this initiative is expressed in that currency. However, you can donate from anywhere in the world without any restriction. Although both the video and the description are in English, the webpage might be in French (since this is one of the languages used in Belgium, which is where the campaign was launched). 2. What will happen to my donation if you are not able to raise enough money to go to China to study?

Due to the short time we have, I am fully aware that this is a big possibility. In case we do not reach our goal, I will stay studying in Medellin and 100% of the donations collected will go to help young students in Medellin with the payment of costs related to their secondary and higher education (i.e. to help young people with economic difficulties to pay their tuition or to get the necessary supplies to continue their education with dignity during these times of crisis).

3. What guarantees that my donation will go exclusively to support this cause?
