Help a College Student Support Her Mother
Lara is a friend of mine. I am conducting this campaign for her and her mother Janis in hopes that they could be helped financially.
A little over a year ago, Lara’s mother began acting strange. She lost her job, lost her train of thought, and couldn’t seem to keep focus. She became incapable of applying to jobs online even though she had previously been the manager of health information management a mere year ago. With the loss of her job, Lara’s mother lost her healthcare benefits, which made finding her the specialty medical care she needed difficult. Lara was able to get her mother on Medicaid, but wasn’t able to get her on Medicare because Janis is well under 65 years old. After months of pleading and searching, she was finally able to visit a neurologist.
In January, Janis was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Dementia. Janis soon became incapable of tasks as simple as making dinner. This made Lara the new head of the household, in charge of paying the mortgage, car loan, utilities, and healthcare for her mother. Lara has made every attempt to cut the budget but is underwater on the car payment and still requires basic internet for her college classes. To make matters worse, Janis’s application for Social Security Disability has been pending for months, and lara has had to hire a lawyer to defend the reasons Janis qualifies for the money. Lara has struggled to manage all of this while caring for her mother all on her own.
Due to Coronavirus, Lara has been unable to work at her job at a local tutoring center. Because she is the sole provider of the house, she needs all the help she can get. She only needs a little money to float her until SSDI comes in, which could take up to a year.
Lara and her mother are both kind, proud people and I would prefer this goes unmentioned to them until the campaign has concluded. This entire ordeal has been exceptionally hard on them.
