Hi! My name is Kiara, I’m 29 years old and from North Carolina. A little about me: I’m a UNCC alum, I was a barista before the pandemic, I love books and my dream is to be a librarian someday. I live with my mom and younger sister, Ebony. My family, like many other families during the pandemic, is in a tough spot. We live in my great-grandmother’s house, the only house me and my sister have ever known, that has been in the family since before I was born. It’s in a loving, predominantly Black neighborhood, and it means the world to us to be a part of such a great community. But we are having trouble paying the taxes on the house. They’re at $14,000, and we received a notice on November 9th that we’re at risk for foreclosure if we don’t have $3,500 by the 12th as a down payment to a payment plan. My mom is on permanent disability and can’t work, and I lost my job back in March like a lot of people, so my sister is the only one working. My mom has gotten in contact with her bank about a loan and we’re waiting to hear back, but it’s a long shot. We’re struggling and scared. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
