My mom is 90 years old — a lifelong learner, teacher, and lover of books.

She grew up in Holland during World War II, survived hardship with resilience and grace, and went on to travel the world, always curious and full of stories. She spent decades sharing that love of knowledge with others as a librarian and teacher, helping generations discover the joy of reading.

Now, after a lifetime of giving, it’s time for her to receive a little help herself.

Her home has become difficult to live in — there’s no hot water, the house gets cold and drafty in the winter, and her arthritis makes it hard to get around safely. My brother has been helping her as much as he can, but he was recently injured and has challenges of his own, making it impossible for him to keep up with the repairs or provide the level of support she needs day to day.

She’s ready — and truly excited — to move into a safe, comfortable assisted living community where she’ll have warmth, care, and companionship. She’s especially looking forward to starting a crochet club there — sharing her creativity, teaching others, and making new friends in this next chapter of her incredible life.

She’s paid into long-term care insurance for over 30 years, and that coverage will take over once she’s moved in. The only hurdle left is covering her move-in fee — the final step between her and this new beginning.

I’m a schoolteacher, and I’ve always admired the way my mom dedicated her life to helping others learn. It’s hard for me to ask for help, but I want to make sure she’s safe and surrounded by care in this next chapter.
