A friend of mine's young son was just diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and is currently in the hospital recovering from DKA. He is only 6 months old and his family is learning to navigate their new normal of finger sticks, injections, sleepless nights, and all of the highs and lows that come with T1D.
My heart breaks for them as they are currently fighting insurance for appropriate supplies and not just the bare minimal. I know how IMPERATIVE a continuous glucose monitor is for a child, especially at his young age. I want to raise money so he can leave the hospital with a Dexcom. This will allow his family to feel more at ease, catch dangerously low blood sugars, and possibly allow them to get some sleep at night. They can be alerted of his lows and treat them before it becomes critical. It will also allow them to see trends so they can dose his insulin appropriately. This also comes along the coattails of his father being laid off from their primary income source.
He's such a little guy but so strong! I will never ever forget being in their shoes and how helpless we felt. We were handed an astronomical pharmacy bill that we had to pay in order to get the supplies we needed to keep Presley alive. This is just the start of medical bills for them, but I pray we can at least get them a head start on what I feel is a crucial device for his care, safety, and well-being. I know Presley's continuous glucose monitor has saved her life more times that we can count. It also basically eliminates the need to finger stick to check sugars which is so comforting for the kiddos and family.
If you have anything to give, please donate to this sweet family. Any little bit helps. Out of respect for them during this difficult time, I am keeping them anonymous as they mourn and prepare for the difficult road ahead. As always, prayers are always appreciated!
