Hi, my name is Jake Heatwole, and I am a 17-year-old filmmaker and media student who has been passionate about creating meaningful and professional video projects since I was nine years old. This January, I have the honor of serving on the Media Team at Ignite, a speech and leadership conference in Spring City, Tennessee. I have also been invited to serve again at the national championship event this July in Columbia, South Carolina.

This opportunity is extremely selective. Only a small group of students are chosen to work directly with experienced media professionals. While I am there, I will be mentored in cinematography, lighting, sound design, editing, live event production, and more. These opportunities will provide valuable hands-on experience that will help prepare me for a future career in media.

How I Have Used Media In My Community

Media is not just something I enjoy. It is something I use to help people in my community. One of my favorite projects was creating a campaign video for a girl who was battling cancer and wanted to run for vice president at her school. I helped her write the script, filmed the video, and edited it. She won, and seeing how much that meant to her showed me that my work can make a real difference to people in my community.

As a Chick-fil-A employee, I have helped create many promotional videos for Chick-fil-A in Manteca. I also volunteer on my church’s media team where I have filmed interviews, edited media content, and run tech during services. Last January, I filmed and edited a scholarship video for my cousin, which earned him $1,000 per year toward his tuition at Grand Canyon University. In March, I received recognition for my work, winning Best Youth Film at a local festival with more than 380 filmmakers.

Why I Am Raising Funds

The total cost for both events is $5,250. This includes travel, lodging, meals, and access to the institute’s professional media equipment for the full two weeks. As a working high school student, I have saved money for these events, but this fundraiser will help me cover these expenses. Every donation will directly support my ability to attend both training events and continue pursuing my passion.

Why This Opportunity Matters

I hope to pursue a career in media, and opportunities like this are very important for developing my skills. Video production is a competitive field, and I want to learn from people who are already succeeding in it. This experience will challenge me and help me grow through real production work on an actual team, along with valuable one-on-one mentoring.
