Receiving the news that a child has been diagnosed with cancer is absolutely heartbreaking for any parent, family member or friend. When the unfathomable happens, we look to our community for help.
On Monday 20th January 2020 Isobel went to school an active, feisty and healthy 12-year-old. She has been experiencing slight discomfort in her right leg for a few weeks but nothing that would give any cause for concern or alarm. She went to school happily on 20th January, but by the end of school day she was in such pain that she was limping and contacted her parents saying she needed to go to the hospital.
Isobel’s parents, Sam and Elliott, took her to the doctors that night for what they thought would show she had pulled a muscle or similar. Isobel was immediately referred to the hospital, going via A&E and then onto Rainbow Ward as by then her right leg had doubled in size in the space of a few hours. After what felt like an extremely long few weeks of tests, we received the devastating news that Isobel had been diagnosed with an extremely rare type of cancer, a synovial sarcoma.
Isobel has been so brave; she has endured 4 rounds of intense chemotherapy with another 2 remaining. Originally Isobel was expected to have to further treatment using Proton beam therapy, this is a type of radiotherapy, but at the beginning of March we were told the only reliable course of action was for Isobel to have her right leg amputated. The tumor was wrapped tightly round her femoral artery, nerve and vein.
On the 12th of May Isobel had a Hip Disarticulation, all full leg amputation. The remarkable surgeons at Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Stanmore were able to save her pelvis whilst removing the tumor. The tumor has been sent for checking that it was able to be taken out with clear margins. Isobel has received intensive physiotherapy since the surgery and we are hoping that she can return home soon to rest before her remaining rounds of chemotherapy.
This is going to be a hard road ahead, but brave mighty Isobel is up to it, and we need your help.
Isobel's will continue to receive intensive treatment over the coming months.
Isobel's parents and family were shocked, saddened, frightened and have had to rearranging life around this news.
We are raising money to support the family with all the additional costs associated with this.
Please support us to do what we can to help this family in need so they can focus on the most important thing, getting Isobel healthy.
THANK YOU in advance for your help, your compassion and generosity.
