Help Sandra Continue Receiving the Memory Care She Needs

Our family is asking for help for Sandra Slazer, a retired minister, longtime substitute teacher, and devoted mother who is now battling dementia and requires full-time memory care.

For many years, Sandra dedicated herself to others. As a minister, she offered guidance and compassion to people during some of the most important moments of their lives. She also spent many years as a substitute teacher, helping and encouraging generations of students. Now, at a time when Sandra can no longer advocate or care for herself, she is the one who needs help.

As Sandra’s dementia progressed, her memory and ability to manage her everyday affairs began to deteriorate. She stopped keeping up with bills and other important responsibilities. Tragically, one of the consequences was that the insurance on her home lapsed, leaving the property uninsured.

At the same time, her sons were becoming increasingly concerned about her living conditions. Someone Sandra had originally taken in when he had nowhere else to go remained in the house, and over time the situation deteriorated. The home became severely hoarded and unsafe, while Sandra’s declining memory left her increasingly vulnerable to being taken advantage of.

Her sons ultimately stepped in, obtained guardianship, and made the difficult decision to move their mother into a memory care facility where she could finally receive the supervision, stability, and professional care she desperately needs.

They also began the legal process of regaining possession of Sandra’s home. During that process, additional people moved into the property, further complicating an already heartbreaking situation.

Eventually, the court issued an eviction.

That very night, Sandra’s home went up in flames.

Because Sandra's dementia had led to the lapse of her homeowners insurance, there is no insurance policy to rebuild the home or recover what was lost.

Her sons had been counting on the eventual sale of the house to fund their mother's long-term memory care. Before the fire, the property was valued at approximately $180,000. Following the fire, its estimated value has fallen to approximately $20,000.

That will cover only about four months of Sandra's ongoing care.

In one night, the financial safety net her family was depending upon to care for her was almost completely wiped away.

Dementia has already taken so much from Sandra: her independence, much of her memory, and her ability to manage the life she spent decades building. Now her family is fighting to make sure it does not also take away her ability to receive the care and security she needs.

We are raising funds to help pay for Sandra's continued memory care and give her sons the time they need to establish a sustainable, long-term plan for their mother's future.

Sandra spent much of her life serving others, first through her ministry and later through her years in the classroom. Today, we are asking others to help take care of her.

Every contribution, regardless of the amount, will help keep Sandra somewhere she is safe, supervised, comfortable, and treated with dignity. If you aren't able to donate, simply sharing Sandra's story can make an enormous difference.

Sandra spent her life giving others guidance, compassion, and a helping hand. Now, as her memories fade, we hope her community can help give some of that kindness back to her.

Thank you for reading Sandra's story, thanks you, sharing it, and helping our family make sure she receives the care she deserves.
Her sons Lonnie, Karl and Harold Slazer as well as her grandchildren Jessie, Carrie, Amanda, Karla we all Thank you so much.
