A Life-Changing Opportunity to Support Communities, Protect the Environment, and Learn New Skills

Hi, my name is Lirael Coles, and I’m a student at Holyrood Academy. I’ve been given an amazing opportunity to join a once-in-a-lifetime expedition to Costa Rica with Camps International—an award-winning organization that leads ethical and sustainable school expeditions around the world.

This isn’t your average school trip. For four weeks, I’ll be living and working in remote areas of Costa Rica’s beautiful rainforest, helping on important community and conservation projects alongside local people and environmental experts.

Here’s what I’ll be doing:

• Supporting environmental conservation efforts in one of the most biodiverse places on Earth
• Working on sustainability projects with rural communities
• Living in the rainforest, surrounded by wildlife like monkeys and toucans
• Learning to scuba dive
• Challenging myself personally, stepping out of my comfort zone, and learning skills I’ll use for the rest of my life

This experience will help me grow as a person, broaden my understanding of the world, and give me valuable skills in leadership, teamwork, and resilience. It will also help shape my future—whether that’s applying to university or pursuing a career in environmental science or global development.

The total cost of the expedition is £5,520, which covers everything from travel and accommodation to training, food, and project support. I’m committed to fundraising the full amount myself through events and personal effort—but I can’t do it alone.
