My name is Hatiná, and I’m the proud mom of a strong, resilient, and beautiful 16-year-old named Laila.

After an accident on Labor Day, what started as a simple wound turned into something much more serious. Sixteen days later, her wound ruptured and became infected, forcing us back to the ER. Doctors discovered necrotic tissue that required emergency surgery — a large area of skin and tissue had to be removed from her thigh.

We spent nearly two weeks in the hospital while she recovered, learned to live with a wound vac, and adjusted to the new normal of wound care. Those days were long and hard, but Laila showed incredible courage and faith through it all.

She’s now home and healing beautifully, but her recovery requires ongoing wound vac changes and nurse visits three times a week. Each visit costs $204, and with Medicaid and hospital assistance still pending, every visit must be paid out of pocket. That’s over $600 a week just for her medical care — not including prescriptions, groceries, rent, or the daily cost of keeping everything running.

Through it all, Laila’s spirit continues to shine. She’s back to building LEGO sets, keeping up with schoolwork, and smiling through the pain. I’m doing my best to manage the logistics and finances, but I can’t do it alone.
