We often take things for granted in life, and I feel blessed that I live in a country that has not faced invasion from other countries, has caused death to family/friends and destruction to cities that I live in. I am asking for help for an extraordinary young man; he was a boy when we first met Nikita. As all you know, we are a Hockey family; our boys have both been skating since they could walk. When Nathan was a Senator playing hockey, we had the opportunity to host a child from Ukraine to stay in our home while he played hockey. We never thought we would get attached to this young boy and get to know his family in return. A bond was made, and he has stayed in our hearts since. We hosted Nikita in 2009 and still keep in touch. He is now a young man and continues to play hockey in Europe countries. He is from Ukraine, and his Dad, mom, and younger sister have always lived in Ukraine. We exchanged many zoom calls with his family when he stayed with us and sent gifts to them.
When Russia's invasion occurred almost two months ago, we reached out to Nikita to see if he and his family were okay. He was in a hotel room waiting to play in a hockey game in Sweden. He was heading home soon; he said to be with his family. Since going back to Ukraine, they have traveled to his grandmother's house 80km from Kharkiv City. This city has been hit by air strikes and brought to rubble. Ten people now live at his grandmother's house, and more family at his grandmother's sister's house. I can't imagine having to pick up and leave my home to get my family to safety to stay out of harm's way and have no idea when I will return home and what will be gone.
In discussions with Nikita, I asked why isn't he leaving and he told us men 65 yrs old and younger are not allowed to leave Ukraine. My Heart stopped, I could not imagine having no choice but to fight if called by my country. A 23 year old boy waiting to see if he will need to fight in a war if it comes to be. A boy still, 23 years old is still a baby in my eyes. I can't imagine being a mother and having no say for my son and what may come to be.
In recent days, we missed a call from Nikita. He wanted to keep us updated with what was going on with him and his family. We want to help Nikita, and his family with supplies for the house and keep them all safe. Any donation will be helpful and much appreciated. I realize there are many people suffering but this particular family is very special to us. I am not one to ask but for Nikita and his family I am asking. I thank you in advance and appreciate it very much. Thank You! God Bless Ukraine.
