Hunger feeds on the bodies of our children, and the rain washes away the blood of the innocent in tents that offer no protection from the cold or the pain. Under the roof of a tent battered by the winter wind, the Yazan Siam family sits, sharing not only a dry loaf of bread dipped in patience, but also the memory of a home that once resonated with laughter before being reduced to rubble by the bombardment.

The father would walk long distances, chasing the elusive prospect of a bag of flour or a liter of potable water. He would return in the evening, his face pale and his body ravaged by the siege, masking his despair behind a faint smile for his two children. The mother, on the other hand, was a master of the alchemy of pain, transforming weeds and brackish water into meals to sustain her children, her heart trembling with every explosion that shook the earth, fearing she would lose what little life remained in this world.

They lived through famine as if it were a monster devouring their emaciated bodies, witnessing death pass by their tent every hour.
