Our family is asking for support for my sister Melissa and her four children during an unexpected medical crisis.

On Sunday, our family’s world changed in an instant.

My sister Melissa’s 8-year-old son, Evan, spent Mother’s Day doing what he loves most — ball hockey, golf, basketball, and enjoying time with family. That night, after being put to bed, everything took a terrifying turn.

Around 10:45 PM, her oldest son ran downstairs calling for Mom because Evan was vomiting and unresponsive. She immediately called 911.

After arriving at the hospital in Cobourg, Evan endured over 40 minutes of seizures before doctors were finally able to stop them — only for more seizures to follow, varying in length and severity. He was then urgently transported to The Hospital for Sick Children, where he was placed on a ventilator Sunday night.

Evan is now beginning to breathe more on his own and is slowly getting stronger, but he still sleeps most of the time and struggles with alertness. Doctors continue searching for answers. A neurological team and genetic specialists have been assigned, and our family is praying they can find the cause, a treatment, and a path forward for the sweetest little boy.

Between hotel stays, parking, meals, gas, and time away from work, expenses are quickly becoming overwhelming.

Melissa is a devoted single mother of four, and right now her entire focus is being by Evan’s side while doctors work to find answers and help him recover.
